FIFTH ANNUAL SKI DAY WITH CARL!

21 Mar FIFTH ANNUAL SKI DAY WITH CARL!

“I can’t believe I am actually doing this!”

“The best day of my life!”

Working at Kids Up Front, we are lucky every day to get to see firsthand the joy on kids’ faces when they attend a special event with us! Our fifth annual Ski Day with Carl is one of the highlights of our year, and certainly the kids’ favorite field trip! Ski Day with Carl began with a simple but incredible idea and financial support from Carl, a donor who saw the potential impact of a ski experience for our kids. Carl continues this tradition given the success of the event and we are very grateful for his passion, his interest and his commitment to us and the kids.

The weather co-operated as it was bright and sunny for the trip out to Nakiska.  We were excited to take 34 deserving kids out to the mountain for a complete VIP experience, that included rentals, lift tickets, lessons, lunch, transport, and snacks.

Only one child in the group had ever skied before. Given that the kids had just watched the Olympics, many were inspired by seeing their heroes on tv and snowplowed through the cones with expert form. Our instructors were impressed by this eager and determined group. Grins flashed ear to ear, even when skis were tangled, kids teetered slowly over, or someone ran over their tips. The kids got up again and again, gaining speed, confidence and experiencing the thrill of the wind in their faces. It was a magical day for everyone involved.

Thank you to all the patient, talented and encouraging staff and instructors at Nakiska for getting our kids safely geared up and on the hill for their very first ski experience! It was a huge success.

The kids left the hill dreaming of one day riding the bronze chair and perhaps getting “right to the top”. Their energy, enthusiasm and bright smiles were infectious to participants and bystanders alike.

Thank you to all the school staff who helped to organize the group, collect all the kids’ sizing details, and help arrange parent volunteers. We really appreciate the time and investment you made to make this day such a wonderful experience. We could not do it without you. Thank you to the parent volunteers who brought so much fun and laughter with them. The kids always love to see their parents, their biggest fans, cheering them on.

A special mention goes out to one father who also tried skiing for the very first time! It is impactful for children to see the adults in their lives trying something new, overcoming fears and hesitation, not being afraid to fall, and getting up again to give it another go! This was a lesson for all of us about the joy that we can find in trying new things as adults, the reward of taking risks and the importance of finding our “inner kid” again. “I can’t believe I am doing this!” he exclaimed.

We are so very fortunate to have the support of so many that value this field trip, and the exposure the kids get to the mountain and outdoor environment, healthy exercise, positive learning opportunities, and new skill development.

This day is made possible through individual and corporate donations, the support of our partner agencies, dedicated school staff, volunteers, and venues and vendors that enjoy being a part of this day. Thank you to each and every one of you; Calgary is truly a city that cares.
