A ‘Suite’ New Years!

09 Jan A ‘Suite’ New Years!

Kids Up Front is so excited to tell you about a special New Year’s Eve event made possible by Jon and the Calgary Hotel Association.

Three families enjoyed an amazing night at the Saddledome, watching the Flames defeat the Oilers in a close game that some have referred to as the “Battle of Alberta”! With over 19,000 fans in attendance, the atmosphere was loud and raucous. There were all the usual hockey highlights that evening, including the Flames’ unexpected comeback, a major check and penalty resulting in a game misconduct for Edmonton’s Keith Aulie, cheering, food and pop, and special treats for our families in the suite. It could not have been better or more exciting hockey at the ‘Dome.

Jon’s generosity allowed our families to experience the full suite experience for the evening; amazing seats, refreshments, and a genuine Flames jersey for everyone! The kids are still talking about the fun they had that night. Special mention was made of the human bowling that took place….anyone care to comment on that?
As one parent wrote, “I wanted to thank you and everybody who made it possible for my family and me to be treated to the most amazing evening on New Year’s Eve. My six year old son…loves hockey and I am not in a financial position to take him to Flames games – especially in a VIP box. The view, the excitement, the special treatment, the jerseys all made for a night that will be etched in our memories always. (My kids) are still talking about what an amazing night that was! Without your invitation, we could have only ever dreamed of such a spectacular night! Thank you!”

When donors provide a suite through Kids Up Front, a volunteer suite ambassador accompanies the recipients for the evening to ensure that everyone gets where they need to go, that the bottomless popcorn arrives and that the kids have a great time!

One of our dedicated volunteers wrote this heartfelt message to us after his experience on New Year’s Eve:
For me, the role of being a Suite Ambassador is a very fulfilling and sometimes a humbling one. I’m an avid hockey fan and since moving to Calgary in 1996, I have had the luxury of seeing many events at the Saddledome. I have many memories from many events there that I will never forget.

Being a Suite Ambassador not only provides me with an opportunity to continue to be at the arena, but it also affords me the opportunity to help other families and kids within our community experience some of those same special moments that can only come from attending a live event. The experiences that I’ve been a part of in only 3 months with Kids Up Front have been incredible. The families that I’ve sat with to watch Hitmen/Flames games with this season have all been so grateful and appreciative for being given such an opportunity. At the conclusion of games, I’ve had families line up to hug me on their way out of the suite and sometimes even being brought to tears (of joy!). When you exit the suite at the end of the evening after being a part of something like that, it’s a pretty special feeling. N.M.

This sentiment pretty much sums up the experience of our Kids Up Front team members and our fabulous community partners who get the tickets to our kids and families, often on their own time and amidst busy schedules. We could not do this without you!
In closing, thank you Jon, thank you fabulous community supporters, and thank you to our kids and families who continue to inspire and amaze us!
