Encouraging Kids to Throw Rocks!
3RD ANNUAL CURLING DAY with Kids Up Front.
There are not too many days of the year when we encourage kids to throw rocks, but April 25th was an exception! In conjunction with the Calgary Curling Club, Kids Up Front hosted 28 youths and their mentors from the Calgary Police Service (Power Play Program) to enjoy an afternoon of curling lessons, skill development and a couple of ends of play!
This sport is unique and certainly a solid part of our Canadian history; it was great to introduce our kids to this sport that was so new to them, and to have them experience such an icon of prairie winters!
The kids and our dedicated police volunteers got to share a lunch together, and then hit the ice for safety and skill demos, and to learn some of the finer points of sliding, sweeping and trying to stay upright! Coach Dan and Taylor did a fine job of making our kids feel confident and comfortable trying out their new skills and managing to even get some rocks in the house! There is definitely some undiscovered talent out there.
A little break for hot chocolate was a welcome treat, and the kids squeaked in a few ends to really feel like pros on the ice. hank you to Bernice from Curler’s Corner for the mementos of the day: miniature squishy curling rocks! Too cute!
Thank you to everyone who helped our kids try something new this date, and for giving of your time and energy to ensure a successful afternoon. We definitely could not have done it without you. The bus, lunch, lessons, treats and the company and support of our coaches, mentors, volunteers and teachers made the day very special!
Dan and Taylor, get ready for next year! The kids were sad that they could not come out every Monday! That says a lot….
Many thanks and much gratitude,
The Kids Up Front Team
